Vampires were undead that fed off the blood of the living. The first vampire was allegedly Strahd von Zarovich, who made a demonic pact with powers in the Amber Temple.
Vampires could create vampire spawn by drinking someone's blood and killing them. Vampire spawn could only become true vampires by having a Vampire lord allow them to drink its blood, but few did this.
