Tempe Falls was a dwarven mining settlement atop the Mountains of Misery in Darkon.
Geography[]
Tempe Falls sat next to a river and was perched on the edge of a cliff, overlooking a waterfall that used to create rainbows on sunny days before the doomsday device's activation.
Description[]
The main entrance into the town was via two large suspension bridges, constructed from simple wood and rope. They were large and sturdy enough to support the heaviest of wagons, but were intended solely for one-way traffic. The other way to reach the town was taking a ferry down the polluted Tempe River and disembarking at the docks on the northern edge of town. This was where the peasantry and warehouses were clustered.
On the surface, the town's small non-dwarven population and businesses were confined to squat buildings constructed of stone. Beneath the town, the dwarves lived in sprawling windowless complexes. Further beneath this lay vaults for the town dead and their extensive mines.
A series of stone aqueducts, both raised and subterranean, ran through the town. These supplied fresh water from the nearby river to every home, while waterwheels situated along the underground aqueducts in the mines provided the necessary power for grinding and crushing the gold and silver ore-laden rocks.
The second layer of the town was the commercial district and where the primary entrance to the mines was located. The third layer of the town was the upper-class residential district. Both the palace of the town's baron and a temple to dwarven gods was located here.
Notable Locations[]
- Dizard's Sorrow: A fountain in the center of the town's commercial district that was lined with ornate stone sculptures. The fountain's name was derived from a miner who drowned himself in it after becoming overcome with sorrow at the realization he'd neglected his children. Dizard's ghost was alleged to haunt the fountain.
- Geraldine's Gem Emporium: A store run by a human named Geraldine Enrich, it specialized in selling figurines carved from local precious gems.
- Thundering Hearth: An inn carved into the cliff face that curved all the way around the town's waterfalls. The food and service were both considered to be good quality.
