Darkonese was a language in Ravenloft that originated in the domain of Darkon.[1]
Description[]
Darkonese was noted as being a complex, highly structured and inflexible language.[1] When spoken properly, it was said to have an authoritative tone. A more relaxed, "vulgar" dialect of the language was used by most Darkonians. This borrowed words and phrases from the ethnic languages of the domain's nonhuman inhabitants as well as several dialects from across the Core.[2]
Speakers[]
Darkonese was uncommon in domains beyond Darkon and Necropolis. Domains where Darkonese speakers were known to inhabit included Falkovnia, Lamordia, Nova Vaasa, Saragoss, and Tepest.[3]
The pure form of Darkonese was only spoken in Darkon's courts and similar formal functions, while the vulgar form was common among nonhumans in the domain. Many wizards considered the language's highly precise definitions for words as lending themselves well to magical writings.[1]
