This article is about the language. For the evil knight, see Balok (knight).
Balok was the oldest known language in Ravenloft, originating in the domain of Barovia. Overtime it spread throughout the Balinok Mountains and the southwestern Core.[1]
Description[]
Balok was composed of many unusual consonant combinations,[2] thick vowels, as well as employed guttural consonants. All together this created an unpleasant mixture of sounds to foreign ears.[1]
Speakers[]
Balok was the primary language spoken in the domains of Barovia, Borca, Invidia, and G'Henna.[3]
Some merchants and innkeepers were known to speak Balok as a form of trade tongue. This developed from there being many trade routes through the domains where Balok was spoken.[1]
Derivatives[]
- Invidian: A bastardized version of the Balok language. It was possible for a Balok speaker to communicate with a speaker of Invidian, though it had to be done slowly.[4]
